In September 2021, just before summer ended, our worst nightmare occurred. I was at a friend's pool with my son E, 2.5 at the time. I was also simultaneously caring for my 5 month old son. E and I swam for a bit. He got out and had a snack. He asked if he could get back in and play with some blocks on the side of the pool, where there was a large sitting/standing ledge. My friend asked if I wanted to put a flotation device on him and I made the mistake of saying no, he would be ok without it. Not a few minutes later, my friend looked over and said where is E? I said oh he must have gone into the bushes to use the bathroom (we just potty trained him in the last month). My friend ran over and noticed he was down in the bottom of the pool. She jumped in and pulled him out. He was unconscious. His lips were beginning to turn blue. I can't tell you if he was breathing or not. Everything was a blur, We were all screaming. We placed him down on the pavers and I sprang into action. I put my 5 month old down in the mulch and began performing mouth to mouth. Thank G-d, he came-to immediately, wild eyes and hysterical crying. It was the most terrifying 5 minutes of my life. I called an ambulance and they came within 2 minutes. The officers told me to pack a bag and we would be going to the hospital. My son vomited and defecated on the officer's uniform. He was still crying and not speaking. I was so nervous that he lost oxygen and his ability to speak. We went to the hospital and thank god everything turned out to be ok, we had to do x-rays to look at his lungs. We were there until 2 in the morning. He was ok but the trauma, shame and guilt are something I live with everyday. Like so many parents, I never thought it would happen to me.
Fast forward to Fall of 2023, I finally decided to sign E and his little brother, now 4.5 and 2.5, for ISR with Ms. Melissa after contemplating it for a long time. It was THE best parenting decision I have made to date. E was very fearful of going under water and swimming without a flotation device. He had made little to no progress in swimming lessons at other facilities. E was nervous to begin lessons, he even lost sleep over it. But once we started with Miss Melissa, all E's fears vanished. From day one, E was comfortable and excited for swimming lessons. He never once cried. He was eager to swim every day and was excited to talk about his progress. He made enormous progress and now has no fears of going under water. He is swimming independently and with confidence. Again, I cannot say enough good things about this program. Miss Melissa has given us the best gift. We look forward to returning to maintenance lessons to get us ready for summer!

We can not say enough about our instructor, Melissa Larsen. This is my son's third summer with her and my daughter's second. She overcomes every obstacle they throw at her with such patience. We have such an appreciation for the passion she has for ISR. The best choice we have ever made for our children was to enroll them in ISR with Melissa.

Melissa Larsen gives excellent feedback after each session. She gives tips to help your child be prepared for lessons and it has really helped me get my 3 year old ready each morning. Her patience and positive attitude is infectious. I would (and have) recommend her to anyone considering ISR.

ISR is hands down the best thing I have ever done as a parent for my two young children (ages 2.5 &4.5). My older son was VERY apprehensive when it came to going under and my younger one was the opposite, such a daredevil. Both boys flourished and took to Melissa immediately. She is so talented and now my boys are safe and confident in the water. We look forward to keeping up with Melissa for maintenance and are so thankful for this program!!

Melissa Larsen has been great with making my daughter feel comfortable and ensuring she succeeds at her swim lessons. Even when my daughter is home, she continues to say "I want to go swimming. Ms. Melissa pick you up.", she loves it!
